Skirting boards

Skirting boards don’t have to be made of the same material of the floor at all costs:
of course, if we lay a new floor in the room, we must choose the same material.
Whatever is the material of the floor, if we have to change a skirting board in bad conditions, we can choose among wood, plastic and plastic with a masonite support.

This will serve to avoid discomforts and expenses for the intervention of a bricklayer or a tiler, because wood and plastic are applied by sticking, expansion plugs or screws. When its material is different from the floor, the skirting board can be painted in the same colour of the walls. (marble or baked clay floor, wooden skirting board) If the floor has a light colour and the walls are lined by a patterned wallpaper, it’s worth to prefer a light or medium tonality wood which doesn’t mark too much, or the same wood of the furniture present in the room.

Wooden skirting boards on sight are treated with protective varnishes, the same ones used for floors. They have different heights but the average is 5-8 cm. They can bestraight, batten, with a triangular section. Their purpose is to cover the contact among the wall and the floor: particularly, if the floor is covered of fitted carpet and there is a wallpaper in texture or weaving strow.
If the wall is straight and smooth, skirting boards are applied by stickers that are placed on the wall and on the internal part of the skirting board. Otherwise, they are fixed on the wall by expansion plugs and screws. There are many kinds of plastic skirting boards: some kinds are similar to wood but they are very strong and indestructible, typical qualities of plastic materials.
Many skirting boards have grooves inside for the passage of light, stereo and telephone wires: it’s worth to prefer this kind of skirting boards to avoid flying wires.
Other skirting boards are in plywood, which you can paint in your preferred colour, or in plastic with a masonite support. This kind is indicated for irregular walls because of their flexibility, and they are applied by sticking.
