Material for Curtains

The material for curtains. With systems like vertical or panel, the choice of the material is due only to the proposals of the producer. For the other curtains the choice is huge and sometimes embarrassing.
There are however some principles to remember: for example, the white or “neutral” curtain can be adapted with everything and is not necessary any exchange when there is a modification, for example, of the covering of the walls or the sofas. The color can create “a shining” note, but it is closely connected to the other colors in the room; if the color is intense (orange, red, green, blue), the filtered light assumes the same shade: an effect sometimes wanted in order to create a particular atmosphere or in order to revive or to dampen the external brightness. The choice of the fabric fantasy has to be carefully considered: it must appeal unconditionedly, it does not have to reproduce a fashionable design connected to the moment and it has to be coordinated with an eventual other fabric fantasy. If there are not other fabric fantasies in the room, the choice has to “sum up” the present colors, or at least “be related” with the predominant paint. It’s very easy to find materials for curtains already arranged with the walls’ coverings and with the stuffed ones: the room will turn out homogenous and personalized.
Then the choice of the material is very important for the passage of the light. If the room receives not much natural light, it will be preferable a pale fabric with wide weft that does not obstacle the brightness. If a window has to be shielded, the choice will be the contrary of the latter. The fabrics produced with man-made fibers have the advantage of an easy maintenance (can be washed at home and they do not need to be ironed) and they are cheaper regarding those with natural fibers. But who prefers natural fibers can choose between a big range of materials like linen, cotton and silk. Some of them are realized in frays of man-made and natural fiber in order to obtain particular effects of light and shade. In order to have a good material that guarantees long duration without alterations, it is better to choose between those ones with “a good brand” where there is the indication of the employed spun (is difficult to judge materials only with the tact). Then it is indispensable to follow exactly the instructions of the manufacturer for the washing part: instructions that can be various according to the assembly system (the supplier of the mechanical parts has to suggest the right type of maintenance). Plain fabrics, with wide weft, require particular attention. The interlace threads do not have to slide or slip one on the other, but they have to be carefully tied between each other. Without this guarantee, the weight of the curtain and the repeated washings can cause damages at the fabric. This can be valuable for every type of material: if the weft is too tight, the probabilities of slackening of the spun and the loss of the so-called “dimensional stability” increase. An interesting product from USA: the “thermic curtain”, a material made of a particular spun that prevents the dispersion of the heat from the room.
